ARMED ROBBERIES BY WEAPON TYPE IN AUSTRALIA 1996 - 1998


Recently released statistics in Australia conform to the world trend that knives and other sharp instruments are the most common weapons used in armed robberies. They account for over 50% of weapons used. ARMED ROBBERIES IN AUSTRALIA IN 1999

Armed and unarmed robbery are among the fastest growing crimes, and along with burglary are the crimes
most closely associated with drug addiction. The most common location in 1999 for robbery offences was the
street or footpath. Armed robberies accounted for 42% of all robberies in 1999. For armed robberies, 46% occurred at retail locations. Firearms were used in 15% of armed robbery offences in 1999.

These statistics provided by the FBI indicate that in the vast majority of cases, handguns were used in assaults on police officers. The most common caliber ammunition was 9mm.
